Bihar is a state in North Eastern India. It has a rich tradition of culture and heritage and its own languages, amongst which Bhojpuri predominates. Bihar has a long tradition of migration, with many indentured labours settling in colonies of the former British Empire. Many of these settlers maintained their Bihari traditions and passed these on to their own families, who in turn passed them on to future generations. In recent times Prime Ministers and Presidents of countries such as Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana can trace their ancestry to indentured labourers originally from Bihar.
This tradition of migration continues today, with many NRI Bihari’s working in the Gulf region to support their families who remain in Bihar. Bihar has a rich spiritual diversity, it is the birthplace of Buddhism, Jainism and the 10th Sikh Guru, whilst Hinduism and Sufism have been nurtured here.
We are a group of volunteers all with strong links with Bihar who are dedicated to promoting Bhojpuri culture and language, and connecting people of Bihari origin living all over the world.
